| This is the world's largest roadrunner. Didn't see any real ones on the road though. |

Outside Phoenix, AZ
We departed Long Beach with our typical late hour – I guess
I am just going to have to plan for that instead of getting frustrated. We are
including a road trip with our cruise around South America. Since we pick up
the ship in Fort Lauderdale and return to Los Angeles, we decided to rent a
nice car with a big trunk and drive it across the country. We are taking two weeks which should give us
some time to do a bit of sightseeing – both the Alamo in San Antonio and New
Orleans are on the schedule.
What would you think a premium car rental would get you?
Personally, I am thinking a Lincoln.
Well, it was a Taurus. I had a lot of concern, but it is actually quite
nice. The trunk space is adequate, it
has reasonable power and all the gewgaws you probably want, including Sirius XM
and infinitely adjustable seats (which can be heated or cooled.)
We took the 91 freeway to the I-10 interstate. Traffic was heavy, as usual, on the 91 but
once we got on the I-10, there have been no delays. The weather was beautiful with
low winds, so the drive was great. Usually this time of year, you will see some
greening of the hills in Orange County, but not this year. Everything is a shade of brown.
We stopped outside of Glendale which is just west of
Phoenix. Hoping to get an early start tomorrow morning – it is a lonnng drive!

Deming, New Mexico
A very nice day to drive through the Southwest. Clear skies,
no winds and little traffic. We stopped for a picnic lunch in Benson, where
there is a very nice roadside park that is part of the old train depot. We ate
potato salad – Russ really likes my potato salad, but I did learn a
lesson. Don’t send Russ to the store by
himself to get 4 large potatoes for potato salad – he came home with potatoes
the size of watermelons! So I am afraid we have enough potato salad to take us
all the way to Ft Lauderdale.
Stopped in Deming, New Mexico early enough to watch the
Super Bowl and have a nice Mexican dinner.
Not thrilled that the Seahawks won – Pete Carroll’s exit from USC left a
bad impression for me. And it was too
bad that the game was so lopsided, not that exciting to watch – more like a
train wreck. Well, another football
season is in the books. Now it’s reruns
until September.

Fort Stockton, TX
We are motoring right along and, tonight, stayed in Fort
Stockton; probably the largest city we have seen since we passed through El
Paso. Taking a leisurely drive through the town of about 8,000 took only about
10 minutes. The area is pretty desolate – very few trees, lots of tumbleweeds
and a few cows here and there. The town was founded here back in the 1800s because it was near the largest spring water in the area. Cattle and sheep ranching as well as oil drilling are the economic basis for today's town. It is starting to get cold and the forecast says
it will get colder. We were forced to dig out our warm hats and mittens from
the bottom of our suitcases – I thought we wouldn’t need them until we reached
the south part of South America, but I was wrong.
| Russ is enjoying the comfortable seats and the really good audiobook. |
